@theroundtable Interviews with Artists, Musicians, and Writers listed most recent first:
Recently, dancers-choreographers Brittany Gaither, Emily Miser, and Nicole Dean from Crossroads Dance Indy joined us @theroundtable to talk about their upcoming January 28-30, 2022 original full-length dance, The Stories We Tell. Gaither, Miser, and Dean each choreographed one of the three pieces that make up the show. Each piece tells a different story, ultimately demonstrating that, because we all have different experiences and backgrounds, we all have a story to share. Performances will be held at Arts for Lawrence on January 28 and 29 at 7:00pm and January 30 at 2:00pm. Crossroads Dance Indy is also hosting a class entitled, Writing the Stories We Tell, where participants get a behind the scenes look at each piece and learn a small section of each. The class will be Monday, December 13th from 6:00-7:00pm.

Thomas DeCarlo of DeCarlo Animation recently joined us @theroundtable to talk about his upcoming full-length animated film, The Encounter, which is based on the animated short of the same name that he created in 2018. The Encounter is being made for under $1 million with an unprecedentedly small team of 12 international artists. The Encounter, while appropriate for families, is written specifically for adults, not children. DeCarlo’s goal is to provide a more intellectual, emotionally complex storyline that addresses racism, xenophobia, and anti-intellectualism while providing strong female characters and a diverse cast. Pre-production on the film began in 2019, and much of the visual design has been completed. Actors will be recorded over the coming months, allowing the voice performances to drive final animation. The film is expected to be released in 2023.
Recently, artist-writers Z. Rose (Payge Gillig) and B. Monét (Natalie Gaytan) of Eclectic Sense joined us @theroundtable to talk about their personal arts journeys and how Eclectic Sense supports and encourages artists. Audrey Barcio is an artist living in Chicago, IL. She’s an Assistant Professor at Ball State University in Muncie, IN (yep, she commutes!). Her work negates the heritage of abstraction intersecting with the tools of the virtual industrial age. Through the use of universal symbology that is rooted in the language of the early abstractionists, her work strives to transcend the accepted cultural raison d’être.
Barcio received her BAE from Herron School of Art and Design and her MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She attended the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art in Brittany (France), completed a Vermont Studio Center residency in 2017, and is a 2019 Pollock – Krasner Foundation Grant recipient.
Barcio’s work has been published in New American Paintings and has been featured in multiple group exhibitions around the U.S., including Art in America at the Art Miami Satellite Fair, ART IN CONTEXT: Selections from the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art Collection, Las Vegas, NV, and GLAMFA at UC Long Beach.
Recent solo exhibitions include Syracuse University, New York, the Las Vegas Government Center, Las Vegas, NV, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Tube Factory, Indianapolis, IN. Barcio’s work is included in several public and private collections, including that of the Barrick Museum of Art. More about Audrey: http://audreybarcio.com
Kim Carlson is an outsider artist who operates and creates within the realms of conceptual and collaborative frameworks. Outsider art is a form of art that is derived from individuals with little to no formal art instruction or knowledge. Outsider art is a gnostic art; the term gnosis refers to something that is ‘known’ directly from the source of all that is and tends to have mystical qualities about it. Outsider artists are often people marginalized in Western society, misunderstood, misrepresented, and misinterpreted in and among the cultures, communities, and families, making many of them in the American and predominantly Western cultures categorized as mentally ill and/or disabled. For Kim, being an outsider artist means that she allows her spirit and intuition to guide what she creates. Artistically, this has led Kim through anime and comic book-style art to painting, mixed media, dance, written word, teaching, nursing, coaching, and Tarot card inspired psychic readings and interpretations. Kim believes the ultimate mission of the outsider artist is to awaken in themselves their authenticity, transform the world they see around them from pain and suffering to joy, love, and inspiration, and then to go out in to the world and shine with hope and light to inspire others to do the same. Artist Megan Jefferson recently joined us @theroundtable:
Megan Jefferson is an Indianapolis painter, actively creating work ever since receiving her BFA from Miami University in 1998. She exhibits extensively, and sells her work to designers and individual patrons. Megan loves to create pieces that feature color-based abstraction. A fascination with and personal connection to color is present in her work, with a focus on landscapes. Megan’s recent work uses washes of color to create dreamy landscapes. She describes the process of her work in this way: I let the process define the artwork and describe my working process as a dance and conversation. I place down some color, and as certain areas and shapes evolve I will “answer” those happenings with additive or subtractive methods. This dance continues until each painting feels right. The result is thoughtful, intuitive, spontaneous and reflective. More about Megan: https://www.jeffersonartstudio.com/
